It’s funny how tropes become tropes. Effectively they’re simplifications. So for example, one will often read that the Northern Ireland Assembly and Executive are a ‘glorified county council’ (check it out. Google that phrase, it’s an interesting exercise) but then one reads this from the ever excellent Tony Connelly of RTÉ and one realises that, whatever the intent of those who designed the structures, that’s very very far from the truth.
