Not wanting to put a “downer” on the great judgement yesterday but I feel it would be remiss of me not to highlight the following
Down through the years the repeated total inaccuracy regarding the shooting of the Hughes brothers has been continually put out on social media and by the media and indeed individuals (some of whom should know better) that the Hughes brothers were caught in crossfire.
Once again I feel the need to repeat the following statement.
The Hughes brothers were NOT caught in crossfire nor were they innocently shot by the SAS. The Hughes brothers were directly and intentionally targeted by the SAS and shot multiple times. Anthony sadly lost his life and Oliver sadly was seriously wounded. The BRITISH State evidence has stated this fact from 1988. The SAS in their statements have clearly said they shot the Hughes brothers so why oh why do we still have the media etc claiming that they were caught in crossfire- almost all of the 72 shots fired that night from the IRA weapons were aimed almost exclusively at what supposedly would have been an empty barracks. This is evidenced again by the British State evidence. There were absolutely NO IRA shots fired in the direction of the Hughes brothers or anywhere near the vicinity of their car. It would be great if this could be reported accurately.
Sorry for the rant but this is just so wrong that after all these years and repeated corrections the media etc still report this inaccuracy – and yes I am conscious that this inaccuracy is included in Justice Girvans Judgement yesterday and because of that we will ask our legal team to highlight this with the court.
Thank you all again for your continued support
