Talking of gay rights, its been mixed a week both nationally and regionally, with the latest polls predicting a comfortable “Yes” majority on the proposed (and long overdue) changes to the constitutional definition of marriage, while in the north-east of the country the Stormont Assembly failed (yet again) to pass a resolution supporting marriage equality. While Sinn Féin proposed and supported the motion, with a majority of Nationalist and more open-minded Unionist MLAs agreeing, the bulk of mainstream British Unionist parties voted no. Not insignificantly five representatives for the SDLP simply – and very pointedly – absented themselves from the vote (though one apparently had family reasons for doing so), while three politicians from the supposedly liberal Unionists of the Alliance Party officially abstained.
