PRISON authorities at Maghaberry gaol have been accused of leaking a document produced by republican inmates to the DUP.
A joint statement issued collectivey by all republican prisioners has alleged that sources at the gaol passed a ‘Conditions Document’ written by them to the DUP justice committee chair and alleged previous member of the UVF Paul Givan. The document was produced by prisoners earlier this year and identifies issues they feel need to be addressed in the high-security prison. The prisoners claim the document was handed on to “Intentionally frustrate the current efforts to resolve outstanding issues through a stock take” recently undertaken by a Department of Justice assessment team. Tensions in Maghaberry gaol remain high with prisoners accusing prison authorities of reneging on a 2010 deal on the use of strip searches and controlled movement. Republican prisioners also say that jail chiefs closed a gate connecting inmates on the jails two republican landings, Roe Four and Roe Three, without consultation earlier this week. Republicans last night said that authorities failed to respond to requests for talks on how conditions in the prison can be improved. They also said the recent decision negatively impacts “on any possibility of progress for a conflict-free environment” and called for the publication of the DoJ report. A spokesman for the Prison Service said: “It would not be appropriate to comment on operational matters.”
